TimberTech and AZEK deck installation

Capped composite for backyard decks, and AZEK PVC for pools, docks and homes on the water.

TimberTech makes two very different kinds of deck board, and knowing which is which saves you money. Its composite lines have a capped wood-plastic core like most composite boards. Its AZEK line is cellular PVC with no wood fiber at all, which is why we reach for it around pools, docks and homes right on the Gulf.

Why PVC near pools and the water

Pool water, sprinklers, shade and salt air keep a deck wet for long stretches in Tampa Bay. PVC boards don't contain the wood fiber that can feed mold or swell over time. They're also lighter, which helps on raised decks and docks. Lighter AZEK colors are made to run cooler for bare feet.

Our TimberTech installation details

  • Concrete footings and pressure-treated framing at 12 inches on center.
  • Expansion gaps set to TimberTech's chart. PVC moves more with heat than composite, so this matters.
  • TimberTech's hidden fastener system or color-matched screws and plugs.
  • Stainless or coated hardware on coastal and pool jobs.
  • A picture-frame border and fascia on every edge.

What it costs

TimberTech's composite lines usually price close to Trex at the same tier. AZEK PVC costs more per board. We quote both side by side when you're deciding, so you can see the actual difference on your deck. See the deck cost guide for what drives the price.

Common questions

Is TimberTech AZEK better than Trex?

Not better across the board, just different. AZEK is PVC, which handles water and salt air extremely well and is our pick for waterfront decks. Trex and TimberTech composite are better value for a typical backyard deck.

Is PVC decking slippery around a pool?

PVC boards have a textured surface designed for wet areas. Like any surface around a pool, keep it clean of algae and leaves, and choose a textured board.

Does TimberTech cost more?

TimberTech composite is in the same range as Trex at a similar tier. The AZEK PVC line costs more per board, and we'll quote both so you can compare.
